NAFA 2020 was in its critical planning stages when the COVID-19 pandemic reached Australian shores and unfortunately our July events were cancelled. However, starting in September running through to the end of October 2020, NAFA was back for a special COVID-Safe version!
Working in conjunction with the Queensland Health COVID restrictions and advice, the NAFA team were able to construct a program safe for our community to attend. NAFA COVID-Safe was delivered to celebrate and support the local arts industry while helping to rebuild the tourism and events sector and improve economic recovery across the city.

BEAUTY, RICH AND RARE

Beauty Rich and Rare, a captivating audiovisual experience, showcased the breathtaking natural wonders of Australia as seen through the perspective of Sir Joseph Banks. The collaboration between The Ville Resort-Casino and Townsville City Council, produced by AGB Events and commissioned by the National Library of Australia, brought this extraordinary portrayal to life.

AWAKE

A unique collaboration with Dancenorth, Awake provided an extraordinary experience that appealed to people of all ages. The stunning vistas of Magnetic Island (Yunbenun) and the natural splendour of the Strand made it a perfect morning activity for the locals.

ART IN THE PARK

Art in the Park effectively connected with the local community across multiple locations over three weekends in a COVID-Safe setting. The free events featured interactive workshops, a range of activities, and entertainment, while providing support to local artists and performers during the post-pandemic recovery phase. 

WONDERLAND UNDER THE STARS

The Townsville community was treated to a diverse range of artistic experiences at Strand Park's open-air amphitheatre during the Wonderland Under the Stars event. The performances, including Club Briefs, Busby Marou, and Knee Deep, left the audience in awe. 

A CELEBRATION OF DANCE

The talents of Townsville's Indigenous artists and performers were highlighted in A Celebration of Dance, which featured traditional dances and cultures. This production was a collaboration with the local Indigenous company, Big Eye Theatre, and was presented at Dancenorth.
