Description

The zig-zag semi-autobiographical journey of a Chinese daughter finding herself across different continents away from her home. This 40-minute stand-up comedy show is based on the performer's experience as an international student in the US and then many working abroad experiences and as a non-native English speaker trying to understand the different cultural norms and values between the world outside China and China. It is semi-autobiographical and self-exploring journey filled with jokes on family drama, romance and sex, language and culture explorations.

December 31,2019, HE flew from Beijing to Melbourne, one stop transferred at Shenzhen airport full of hopes and dreams of a new life in Australia with nothing and zero knowledge about Australia. However, like all her adventures, she was just so positive thinking and keeping her fingers crossed for a good-lucky journey. She always has trust in the locals' niceness and hospitality. Like all other adventures, Melbourne did not fail her. She loves the city's coffee shops, over-prices organic food and lockdown sequels. The year she landed in Melbourne, she was 30 years old and the only offspring of her parents, she was nowhere close to being a good Chinese daughter, yet she felt free in Melbourne.

HE grew up in a small town of Chongqing, China, a mountainous region. Her family lived in that area for generations with a strong passion for drinking, cursing, and gambling. Growing up as an only child, she was pampered with love and did not like sharing food, "very impulsive and selfish”, a lovely quote from her mum. She finished her university in Beijing and completed her master's degree in the U.S. During her years of living abroad and dealing with culture shocks and family dramas, she found out that stand-up comedy is the best anger management technique to keep people around her safe. Fast forward to today, and empowered by doing stand-up in English, she feels sassier and more fearless than ever not to be a good Chinese daughter because her parents don't understand English.
